Just finished watching the jaw-dropping Control, which got me thinking about the best ever films about music. Below is a hastily penned top twenty (entirely subjective, as always). Let me know what you think I've missed in the comments.

I can only assume that you forgot "Can't Stop The Music" in error.;-)

A useful list indeed. A few in there to check out. For me 'Stop Making Sense', 'Don't look Back', 'Filth and the Fury', 'Saturday Night Fever', 'School of Rock', 'US vs John Lennon' and of course Norman Jay's 'Good Tiimes' would be up there with Moulin Rouge in the top 5. Loved 'Dig' though I never really got 'The Blues Brothers'.

I have some to add
Empire Records
SLC Punk

I suppose neither are just about music but I think they can be considered the same. Similar to the way that I consider High Fidelity about music.

I started mentally going through "music movies" in my mind and didn't get too much further than "A" in my alphabetical list... Ever seen, "American Pop? It's pretty fantastic. And you could definitely argue the point that George Lucas' "American Grafitti" is a great music movie as much as a coming-of-age film. Other EXTREMELY NOTABLE Exclusions: Pink Floyd's "The Wall", The Who's "Tommy", and why isn't "Singles" - the worst music movie with the best soundtrack ever.... on this list?

I also loved "Dreamgirls." Jennifer Hudson is fantastic.

Too bad the beatles never had a movie. It could be called a hard days night. I bet that would be considered a great movie about music.
